About the museum
The Mitspielzeugmuseum grew out of an initiative by the Leipzig association Mehrweg e. V. The first exhibits were shown from November 2001; because suitable rooms were lacking, the project initially travelled as a "museum in a suitcase".
On November 9, 2004, it found its permanent home in the Leipzig district of Stötteritz. The museum sees itself as a social and museum-education project: visitors are meant not only to look at the toys of the past but to experience that time themselves by playing with the historical pieces.
According to a leisure portal, the collection comprises around 2,880 objects, mostly toys from the GDR and other Eastern Bloc countries, including trains, dolls, toy shops, construction sets and tinplate toys, as well as children's books, films and sound recordings. The holdings have grown mainly through private donations and loans.
