Panometer Leipzig

Former gasometer in Leipzig where Yadegar Asisi shows his 32-meter-high 360° panoramas – currently ANTARKTIS (Antarctica).

Opening hoursAdmission from €16 Wheelchair accessible Café

About the museum

The building was constructed in 1909/10 as a gas holder for the municipal Gaswerk Süd, designed by August Friedrich Viehweger. The round brick structure, nearly 57 meters in diameter, supplied the city with gas until 1977 and then stood empty for many years.

In the early 2000s, artist and architect Yadegar Asisi converted the gasometer into an exhibition venue for monumental circular paintings. The name Panometer combines the words panorama and gasometer. In 2003 the first Asisi panorama, EVEREST, opened here – the starting point for further panorama venues in Dresden, Berlin, Wittenberg and Pforzheim.

Since then the panoramas have changed every two to three years or so: the Himalayas were followed by ancient Rome, Amazonia, the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig in 1813, the Great Barrier Reef, the Titanic, Carola's Garden, New York on September 11, 2001, and Rouen Cathedral in Monet's time, among others.

Since January 2026 the venue has been showing ANTARKTIS, Asisi's fifth nature panorama. Like all the panoramas, it is accompanied by a supporting exhibition and a film; a 15-meter-high viewing tower offers a view across the 32-meter-high picture. The venue is operated by Panometer GmbH.

Highlights

  • 360° panorama ANTARKTIS, 32 meters high
  • 15-meter-high viewing tower in the middle of the panorama
  • Simulated day-night cycle with light and sound
  • Industrial monument: converted gasometer from 1910
  • Accompanying exhibition and film on the making of the panorama

Permanent exhibitions

  • ANTARKTIS – On view since late January 2026, this 360° panorama depicts the Antarctic coast with icebergs, glaciers and the underwater world beneath; expected to run until at least early 2028.
