LANG IST ES NICHT HER. UND JETZT IST ES SOWEIT.

The exhibition is devoted to the writer and journalist Susanne Kerckhoff (1918–1950) and her series of portraits in the Berliner Zeitung of 1948/49. Five new artworks respond to her texts.

About the museum

The Mitte Museum is housed in the former 32nd Gemeindeschule (municipal school) on Pankstraße, built in 1865/66 and one of the oldest surviving school buildings in Berlin. The Heimatmuseum Wedding (local history museum) was already located in the building; it had grown out of a local archive founded in 1952 and became a museum in 1989.

Today's museum came into being in 2004 from the merger of three houses after the Berlin district reform: the Museum Mitte, founded in 1987 as the Heimatgeschichtliches Kabinett (local history cabinet) for the 750th anniversary celebrations in the eastern part of the city and moved in 1997 into the Palais am Festungsgraben; the Heimatmuseum Tiergarten; and the Heimatmuseum Wedding.

The permanent exhibition "Gewachsen auf Sand" tells, across ten rooms, how planning, society and culture have shaped the urban space of Mitte over the past 250 years. Admission is free; a branch in the Tiergarten town hall complements the house.
