About the museum

The small wine museum belongs to the Mayschoß-Altenahr winegrowers' cooperative and tells the story of viticulture in the Ahr valley. The cooperative began in 1868 with 18 members and is considered one of the oldest winegrowers' cooperatives. Today more than 460 members farm about 140 hectares of vineyards on steep slopes between Altenahr and Ahrweiler.

The centerpiece is the cellar complex in Mayschoß, which the members built themselves in the 1870s and 1880s and which is among the oldest in the Ahr valley. Red wines mature here for several months in barriques and wooden casks; the treasure room holds special wines from the long history of the business.

In 1982 the cooperative merged with the Altenahr winegrowers' cooperative, and in 2009 the Weinmanufaktur Walporzheim joined. The museum is shown during guided tours of the cellar and at wine tastings in Mayschoß.
