Winzermuseum Bachem
Small winegrowers' museum on the upper floor of the Bachem bakehouse from 1650, with tools from winegrowing and farming on the Ahr.
About the museum
The Bachemer Backes was built in 1650 as the communal bakehouse of the wine village of Bachem and is one of the oldest buildings in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The ground floor is built of quarry stone, the upper floor partly of half-timbering. For decades the upper floor served as a schoolroom, and during the Wars of Liberation a Cossack guard is said to have been quartered in it in 1814. The building is listed, and the old oven is still fired up for baking bread at festivals today.
In the 1970s a small museum on the village's winegrowing history was set up on the upper floor. It is run by the Bürgergemeinschaft Bachem 1977 e.V. (citizens' association), whose members look after it on a volunteer basis and open it on Sundays during the season.
On display are tools and implements with which winegrowers and farmers on the Ahr used to work – vine knives and sickles, a ladder wagon, a cellar pump and other equipment, some with dialect names. There are also mementos of village history, such as photos of the Bachem wine queens, the uniform of the last village policeman, a memorial piece for those killed in the First World War and a guest book with prominent entries, including one by Willy Brandt from 1986.
