Special exhibition
Exhibition announced from early summer 2026 on new research, finds, and insights from the excavations of recent years.
In March 1980, excavators widening federal highway B 267 on the Silberberg near Ahrweiler unexpectedly struck Roman masonry with colorful wall paintings. The subsequent excavations by the state archaeology service uncovered the exceptionally well-preserved main building of a country estate that was inhabited from the 1st century onward, extended several times, and deliberately abandoned around 259/60.
The building later served as an inn and then as an iron smelter; after slope debris had buried the ruins, a cemetery was established on the site in the early Middle Ages. It was precisely this covering that preserved the walls, wall plaster, bath, kitchen, and underfloor heating systems in rare completeness.
Since May 1993, a museum building has protected the site; visitors walk along raised walkways through the Roman rooms. A model of the estate, a film about the excavation, and finds from everyday life round out the tour. The flood of July 2021 also damaged the Roman villa; during the restoration, excavations took place for the first time since the museum opened, and the museum has been presenting their results since 2026.
