About the museum

The museum is run by the Verein zur Förderung Moderner Kunst in Goslar (VFK), an association founded in 1974 by local citizens led by industrialist Peter Schenning. Together with the city, it awards the Kaiserring, one of the most prestigious international prizes for contemporary art; the first laureate was Henry Moore. To give the prizewinners a dedicated exhibition venue, the association opened the Mönchehaus-Museum in 1978, initially directed by Heinz Holtmann.

The museum occupies a late Gothic half-timbered house from 1528, a typical town farmhouse (Ackerbürgerhaus) of Goslar’s old town, extended with modern additions; it underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2014. The garden holds works by Kaiserring laureates such as Joseph Beuys, Rebecca Horn, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and the cellar houses an installation by Anselm Kiefer. Over the years, this has grown into an expanding collection that includes works by Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman, and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Since 1984, the association has also awarded the Kaiserring fellowship to young artists; it includes a solo exhibition, a publication, and a purchase of work. The VFK has around 2,000 members and is responsible for the program of solo and thematic exhibitions, talks, concerts, and readings. Workshops for all age groups take place in the “Atelier für Alle” (Studio for Everyone). Following Bettina Ruhrberg, who headed the museum from 2006, Miriam Bettin has been its director since fall 2025.
