The exhibition shows how holidays were taken in the GDR, what they cost, how guests affected the region and tourism, and how the state regulated tourism.
The house on Strandstraße was built around 1850 as a half-timbered building and is a listed monument. Since 1963 it has served as the local history museum for Göhren and the Mönchgut peninsula; its opening goes back to Ruth Bahls.
In recent years the building has been restored and expanded. The permanent exhibition was last fully revised in winter 2023 and made digital and interactive. It tells how the residents of the peninsula lived, how Göhren developed from a fishing and farming village into a Baltic seaside resort, and which customs and legends shape the region.
Highlights include the valuable Mönchgut costumes and grave goods from the roughly 5,000-year-old so-called Herzogsgrab (Duke’s Grave). The museum belongs to the Museumsgesellschaft Mönchgut-Granitz, which also runs the Rookhus in Göhren, the School Museum in Middelhagen, and the Seafarers’ House in Sellin.
