About the museum

The school museum is located in the former sexton's house in the center of Middelhagen on the Mönchgut peninsula of Rügen, right next to St. Katharinen church. A predecessor building – a smoke house without a chimney – is documented since 1747; the present building dates from around 1825. Besides schooling, the pastor also used the house for a time for his official duties.

For generations, children of all ages learned together here in a single room; as late as 1946, up to 60 children in grades 1 to 8 crowded into the schoolroom. Until 1962, the building served as a one-room feeder school for the new Zentralschule Mönchgut. The school museum opened in it on August 1, 1986.

On display are the classroom with school desks from different eras – from a plain bench from the time of construction through the widespread Rettig bench to East German furniture of the 1980s – as well as wall charts, reading boards, and other teaching aids. The furnished residence of the teacher and sexton has also been preserved. Today the Museumsgesellschaft Mönchgut-Granitz (museum society) runs the museum; in historical school lessons, visitors experience the strict teaching of the past.
