About the museum
Mori Ôgai (1862–1922) was a Japanese physician, natural scientist, writer, and translator. He grew up in Tsuwano, trained in Japan, and stayed in Germany from 1884 to 1888; in 1887/88 he worked in Berlin at Robert Koch’s Hygiene Institute.
The Mori Ôgai Memorial was set up at Humboldt University in 1984. It uses rooms on the first floor of a house on Luisenstraße where Ôgai lived during his Berlin years. The permanent exhibition is devoted to his life and work; a dedicated memorial room keeps alive the atmosphere of his study trip. The memorial is now part of the university’s Mori Ôgai Center, which also runs the Ôgai internet portal.
