About the museum

Technology-minded members of the MC Robur Zittau motorcycle club led by Horst Fiebiger opened the museum on July 4, 1992, in a former weaving mill on David-Goldberg-Straße in Großschönau. On around 450 square meters, they displayed the vehicles, engines, and workshop equipment they had collected over the years.

As the old premises became too cramped, the collection moved to a larger factory building on Hauptstraße, where life rafts, inflatable boats, and life jackets had previously been made. The new building was officially opened on April 6, 2019; it offers brighter rooms, better transport links, and space for special exhibitions.

The focus is on vehicle manufacturing in Upper Lusatia, above all the Phänomen-Werke in Zittau, founded by Gustav Hiller in 1888 and later renamed the Robur-Werke. The exhibition ranges from an 1820 running machine (draisine) to prewar motorcycles, Czech machines, and East German two-wheelers, all the way to racing bikes from the Lückendorf hill climb. There is also a locksmith’s workshop from around 1900 driven by line shafts, a steam engine installation from 1902, historic shopfronts, and a 1930s gas station. The museum is run by volunteers from the club’s museum working group.
