Mühlenmuseum Pewsum

Mill and crafts museum in the Galerieholländer (gallery-type Dutch windmill) of Pewsum: country life, old crafts, dike building, and milling technology of the Krummhörn.

Opening hoursAdmission from €2

About the museum

A post mill already stood on the site of today's Pewsum mill in the early 15th century. After its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, a Galerieholländer was built in 1622, which fell victim to a major fire in 1824. The present building was erected and put into operation by 1843.

Until 1954 the mill was used for grinding and hulling grain as well as for oil production. In 1960 the municipality of Krummhörn took over the building; the Heimatverein Krummhörn, founded in 1950, has since looked after the preservation and furnishing of the interior rooms.

In 1968 the association opened a museum on the rural life of the region in the mill and the adjoining Gulfhaus. On display are agriculture and dairy farming, blacksmithing and wheelwrighting, housekeeping, dike building and drainage, and the technology of milling. An eye-catcher is a reconstructed corner shop (Tante-Emma-Laden) with an old shop counter; there is also a collection of old typewriters.

After water damage caused by a storm, the museum was closed from 2022. For German Mill Day on May 25, 2026, the 23-meter-high mill with its 22-meter-wide sails was reopened to visitors.
