About the museum
The museum goes back to a research project by the Volkswagen Foundation together with the Ostfriesische Landschaft, which ran from 1979 to 1984 under the title “Arbeit und Gerät der Bauern und Landhandwerker 1850–1950” (Work and Tools of Farmers and Rural Craftsmen). Because of the strong public response, a volunteer working group formed in 1981 to collect and restore agricultural tools. Soon around 500 larger and smaller pieces had been gathered.
To make the collection publicly accessible, the Ostfriesisches Landwirtschaftsmuseum Campen was established. It has been permanently set up since 1986 and for a long time was run by changing operators under the sponsorship of the municipality of Krummhörn. Since 2023 the association Museumsfrünnen Campen e. V., which had supported the house before, has run the museum on its own responsibility.
The exhibition is housed in two listed Gulfhöfe, the Heikens-Hof from around 1887/88 and the Ohlinghof from 1905, plus a farmhand's house and the outdoor grounds. More than 600 objects are shown, from small tools to a large steam engine, including many tractors and agricultural machines that tell the story of the shift from muscle power to motorization.
