About the museum
The museum goes back to the Heimatverein Leingarten (local heritage association), which collected objects for a local history museum in the old town hall of the district Schluchtern. At first the rooms served only as storage; then two of them were furnished for visitors with archaeological finds and furniture from around the turn of the century.
Over time, conversions, new openings and an annex added further exhibition rooms. In its present form the house has existed since 1990, based on a concept by Markus Müller. Since 2020 an extension with the Lothar-Böhringer-Saal has offered additional space.
The permanent exhibition shows finds from the Neolithic, especially of the Großgartach culture, boundary stones (Markungssteine) as signs of former rule, the water supply and sewage problems of past centuries, emigration and immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries, and local crafts since the mid-19th century. The Heimatverein runs the museum on a voluntary basis and also uses it for cultural events.
