About the museum
The Schwaigern winegrower Karl Wagenplast (1904–1978) excavated and collected archaeological finds for decades, from the Neolithic to the early modern period. His excavation at the Leidensberg, where the medieval predecessor settlement of Schwaigern once stood, became especially well known.
After his death, his heirs handed the collection over to the town on condition that it be made publicly accessible. In 1982 the museum opened in the former cemetery chapel, run by volunteers from the local heritage association (Heimatverein) founded in 1981. The chapel continues to serve as a depot until it is renovated.
Since 2010 the museum has been located on the second floor of the Alte Stadtkelter, which was converted into a media library (Mediathek); the entrance is at the side. Because of the limited space, Wagenplast's collection can only be shown in part; in addition, the Heimatverein presents changing local history themes and works by Schwaigern artists. In the entrance area stands a replica of the base of the Siebengötterstein from Stetten.
