About the museum

The idea of a museum in Schramberg came up as early as 1880, but it took almost a century until the town museum was founded. After attempts in the 1930s and a boost from the town's 1967 anniversary, the museum was re-founded in 1979 and conceived as a “Museum für Technik- und Sozialgeschichte” (Museum of Technology and Social History); it opened in 1982. It is housed in the former castle of the Counts of Bissingen and Nippenburg, which was built as a classicist structure in 1840/43, was bought by the town in 1923, and later served as a school and cultural center.

From the beginning, the collection focused on local industrial products: straw goods, stoneware and clocks, built up largely through donations from citizens. In 1982 the first permanent exhibitions on straw weaving and stoneware production opened; in 1983 clock manufacturing and the clock industry followed; and in 1985 an exhibition on castle history with finds from the “Burgpioniere” (castle pioneers). In 1986 the Junghans clock factory transferred its extensive collection as a permanent loan.

Today the permanent exhibition on two floors presents the town's history from its medieval market settlement through industrialization to the present; changing special exhibitions on regional and wider themes are added. Hands-on stations and a family rally open the house to children and adults alike.
