About the museum
Burg Brome is a moated castle that probably dates back to before 1195, under Henry the Lion. Its garrison was to monitor the nearby border with the Mark Brandenburg. In 1376 Emperor Charles IV personally took possession of the complex.
The main building that survives today dates from the Renaissance and served as the seat of a castle bailiff, who administered the surrounding villages, until the 20th century. From 2009 to 2014 the severely dilapidated building was extensively restored and re-established. In the process, remains of the 16th-century castle brewery came to light; they can now be seen in the entrance area.
Inside the house, the museum shows traditional crafts in fully equipped workshops, where visitors are welcome to touch and try things out. Twice a year the "Lebendiges Museum" (living museum) comes to life: craftsmen demonstrate their work in the workshops, and a working printing press with a Linotype typesetting machine goes into operation. The museum is run by the Landkreis Gifhorn (Gifhorn district) together with the Museums- und Heimatverein Brome (museum and local heritage association).
