About the museum

The Städtisches Museum Pfungstadt is based on Borngasse in the former Borngass school, built in 1837. A second site, the Alte Remise on Rügnerstraße, complements the museum. Both buildings are closed until further notice.

The collection begins with natural and early history: excavation finds from the Stone Age to the Frankish period are shown, including the jaw of an Ice Age rhinoceros and a Roman well made of oak trunks. A dedicated room covers the Roman period with finds from the local area and a model of a marsh bridge. Furnished rooms from around 1900, such as a pharmacy, kitchen and schoolroom, along with crafts such as dentistry, shoemaking, comb-making and farming, show earlier ways of life.

The town's industrial history includes cigars, matches, ultramarine, bricks, beer and heating technology. The Alte Remise deepens the stories of match, tobacco and brick production, as well as flax growing and textiles. Further topics include the formation of the Pfungstädter Moor, Germany's first goat breeding association, the history of the Jewish circus family Lorch from Eschollbrücken, and the Hahn local heritage room, dedicated to the district of the same name.
