About the museum
The Schlösschen Michelbach in the Kahlaue was built around 1730 as a noble country seat in the form of a moated water castle (Wasserschlösschen). In 1980, the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Alzenau (local heritage and history association) set up a local history collection on the ground floor. After a thorough renovation, the Museum der Stadt Alzenau moved into the Baroque complex in 2006.
The exhibition "Regionalität und Wandel – Streifzüge durch eine Grenzregion" is designed according to museum-education principles and relies on media technology and hands-on stations. Among other topics, it covers early border lines, the struggle for the Freigericht, local history, religious life, and political upheavals and modern developments. The upper floor houses an event hall for cabaret, chamber music and exhibitions; in the freely accessible castle garden, more than 100 roses in 55 varieties grow.
