Stickereimuseum Oberhundem
Private embroidery museum in the half-timbered parsonage of 1685 in Oberhundem, with historic needlework in many techniques from many countries.
About the museum
In the middle of the village of Oberhundem stands the listed former parsonage, a half-timbered house in the Sauerland style dating from 1685. A private embroidery museum has been set up in its restored core since 1981, according to the tourist office the only one of its kind in the Sauerland.
On display is historic needlework in a wide range of techniques, from ecclesiastical vestment embroidery and whitework to delicate shadow embroidery, including pieces from many countries. Among the special objects is a sampler from 1780 embroidered by a girl with her own hair. On guided tours, the operators explain the techniques and the stories behind individual pieces. The historic rooms with their rustic masonry and a fireplace form a deliberate contrast to the fine needlework in the display cases.
In the same building, the Steinacker family has run a master framing workshop since 1988, specializing in framing embroidery, as well as a small museum shop with embroidery patterns, thread, linen, and supplies. The museum's aim is to preserve the old craft and pass the knowledge on to younger generations.
