The exhibition shows what MUSIT collects, how citizens can contribute, and why collecting is more than owning: passion, duty and responsibility.
MUSIT is the municipal museum of Troisdorf’s urban and industrial history. Using the example of the town, it shows how industry, corporate history, entrepreneurial personalities and social, architectural and infrastructural developments influenced one another. It is housed in the new building of Burg Wissem, which was built in 2011/2012 to designs by the Cologne architects Schneider & Hillbrandt.
The permanent exhibition is organized chronologically into five thematic areas and begins with rural life around 1800. It traces Troisdorf’s path through iron smelting, explosives and the metal industry to becoming an industrial town, covers the two World Wars and the Nazi era, including forced labor, and ends with postwar development. Troisdorf gained town status in 1952 and in 1969 became the largest town in the Rhein-Sieg district. The presentation of the plastics industry, which began in Troisdorf in 1905, is considered a particular highlight.
Objects, large photographs, listening stations, films and interactive stations make the history come alive for children and adults alike. The museum shares a combined ticket with the nearby Bilderbuchmuseum (picture book museum) in the manor house of Burg Wissem.
