Stadtmuseum Siegburg
City museum on Siegburg's Markt in the birthplace of Engelbert Humperdinck: city history on four floors, Rott fossils, and contemporary art.
About the museum
The collection goes back to the Altertumsverein Siegburg (antiquities society), founded in 1903 by Mayor Carl Plum. After a major local history show in 1925, a first local history museum opened in 1931 in the north wing of the abbey on the Michaelsberg. During World War II the collection was moved to storage elsewhere; in 1960 a fresh start followed on Kaiserstraße, and later a gatehouse museum displayed parts of the holdings.
The present museum building stands on the lower Markt on the vaulted cellars of the medieval town hall, where the council met from 1438/39. After falling into disrepair, the building was demolished in 1826 and a Latin school was built on top of it. The composer Engelbert Humperdinck was born there in 1854, hence the name Humperdinck-Haus. Later the building was used by the district court and the tax office.
The building was converted starting in 1987, and the city museum opened here on May 19, 1990. The permanent exhibition on four floors ranges from the Rott fossils through the abbey, Siegburg stoneware, witch persecution, and the Prussian era to National Socialism and the former market kiosk; the Humperdinck section has been redesigned. In addition, there are up to six exhibitions of contemporary art each year, an artothek (art lending library), and rooms for events and weddings.
