The Museum der Unerhörten Dinge goes back to the artist Roland Albrecht. It was founded in 1998 at the Dresden gallery Raskolnikow, went online in 1999, and in 2000 moved into its own premises at Crellestraße, between house numbers 5 and 6, in Berlin-Schöneberg.
Its concept is unusual: ordinary, often overlooked objects receive stories that earn them a place in the collection. The stories are not based on historical or scientific evidence but play with possibilities; a telescope, for example, becomes the instrument through which Columbus is said to have sighted America. As a result, the collection is not bound to any classic system of order and is closer to the chambers of wonders of earlier centuries than to a specialist museum.
More than 400 objects hang in the storage area, sorted by weight, numbered and cataloged. In the exhibition room, visitors read the accompanying texts next to the objects. The museum also presents special exhibitions by related artists, hosts concerts, film evenings and talks, and takes part in the Lange Nacht der Museen (Long Night of the Museums).
