About the museum
In 1907 the Bavarian state established a royal lace-making school in Tiefenbach. Women and girls from the region learned hand bobbin lace there and could earn additional income. Tiefenbach lace, together with that from Schönsee and Stadlern, earned a good reputation and was even shown at world’s fairs.
The museum is located in the hall of the school building erected in 1912, which now serves as the town hall. It displays designs, pattern drawings, lace pattern sheets (Klöppelbriefe) and finished lacework from Tiefenbach, along with the history of the school and the significance of lace-making as a cottage industry in the eastern Bavarian border region. Also on show are laces made to designs by well-known textile designers such as Suse Bernuth and Else Jaskolla.
Lace-making in the Upper Palatinate Forest (Oberpfälzer Wald) was added to the Bavarian and the nationwide register of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. The lace expert Marianne Stang (1942–2020) contributed her knowledge to building up the museum.
