About the museum
The museum is housed in a listed half-timbered house from the 17th century, built in 1618 in the village center of Wangen, a farming and fishing village. The support association rescued it from demolition and moved it in 1986 to its present site on the lakeshore, where it was set up as a museum.
The archaeology section shows finds from the pile-dwelling settlements of Wangen-Hinterhorn, which have belonged to the UNESCO World Heritage site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” since 2011: clay vessels, stone tools, bone and antler implements, and organic remains of wood, grain and textiles from the Neolithic (ca. 3800 to 2800 BC), preserved under airtight conditions.
The paleontology section presents fossils from the roughly twelve-million-year-old Öhningen strata, mostly on loan from the Karlsruhe Museum of Natural History, with more than 900 animal and 450 plant species. In 2016 the association also built a reconstructed Stone Age house in the shallow water zone of the lake. The museum is run by the Förderverein Fischerhaus (Fischerhaus friends’ association) with around 130 volunteer members.
