About the museum

The Museum Eschenz opened in 1991 and shows what has been preserved in the ground and in the village of the municipality at the outflow of the Rhine from the Untersee. Around the turn of the era, an important Rhine crossing was located here, around which the Roman settlement of Tasgetium developed. The area was already settled long before that: the finds show an almost unbroken settlement since the end of the Paleolithic.

On the second floor, archaeological finds from Eschenz are on display, from the earliest traces of humans at the Untersee to the end of the Roman era. The damp soil has preserved even wooden objects exceptionally well, including an intact panpipe and a small Celtic votive figure. Arrowheads, combs, pottery and writing tablets are also part of the collection. The most precious originals, such as the Bronze Age gold cup found during track work near the train station, are kept in the Museum für Archäologie in Frauenfeld; in Eschenz, copies are on view.

On the third floor, the museum displays everyday objects, mementos and documents from the history of the village. The Verein für Dorfgeschichte (Association for Village History) opens the house and offers guided tours. The basement can be rented for events.
