About the museum

After the Nazis dismissed Otto Dix from his professorship in Dresden in 1933, the painter moved with his family to Lake Constance. In 1936 he moved into a three-story house with large studio windows in Hemmenhofen on the Höri peninsula, designed by the architect Arnulf Schelcher. Dix lived and worked here with his wife Martha and their children Nelly, Ursus and Jan until his death in 1969.

Martha Dix left the house in 1979. The building and garden have been listed as a historic monument since 2005, and in 2010 the Otto-Dix-Haus-Stiftung acquired the property. During the subsequent restoration work, murals came to light in the basement that Dix and his guests had painted at a carnival party in 1966. In June 2013 the house opened as a branch of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart.

The presentation tells of the everyday life of an artist's family in the postwar years; a free media guide leads through the living quarters, the studio and the terraced garden. For the 2026 season, the former children's rooms on the third floor were also newly furnished: with original objects from the family's possession, such as books, instruments and the children's own works, they trace the lives of the three Dix children.
