Hansjakob-Museum im Freihof

Literary museum in Heinrich Hansjakob's retirement home in Haslach, with art exhibitions on Carl Sandhaas and Otto Laible.

Opening hoursAdmission €6

About the museum

The museum commemorates Heinrich Hansjakob (1837–1916), the writer, priest, and politician from Haslach im Kinzigtal. It is the only museum in the Kinzig valley dedicated to a writer, and it is housed in the "Freihof", the retirement home that Hansjakob himself designed.

Hansjakob was, among other things, a priest in Hagnau on Lake Constance, where he helped found a winegrowers' cooperative; later a priest in Freiburg; and for ten years a member of the Baden state parliament. He became best known as the author of more than 70 books and writings in which he described farmers, craftsmen, townspeople, and traders of the Black Forest in the 19th century. The exhibition shows his work as a writer, historian, publicist, and politician.

Besides the Hansjakob section, the house has two permanent art exhibitions. On the second floor is the most extensive retrospective of the Haslach draftsman and painter Carl Sandhaas (1801–1859); in the attic is a large display on Otto Laible (1898–1962), a representative of the Baden Secession.
