About the museum

The Schwarzwälder Trachtenmuseum (Black Forest Costume Museum) opened in 1980 and is housed in the restored convent buildings of the former Capuchin monastery of Haslach im Kinzigtal. The town of Haslach runs the museum, which also houses the tourist information office.

The monastery goes back to a decision by the Counts of Fürstenberg in 1612; construction began in 1630, and the first friars moved in as early as 1632. After the monastery was dissolved in 1823, the last Capuchin continued to live in the building until 1844; the town then bought the buildings and used them for purposes including apartments and a gymnasium. The complex, with its monastery church, cloister, and the neighboring Loreto Chapel from 1657, is considered a rare, largely unaltered example of Baroque Capuchin architecture in southern Germany.

The collection is one of the most important of its kind in Baden-Württemberg. More than a hundred figures wear festive and everyday costumes from the various valleys of the Black Forest and its surrounding areas, as worn mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries. They are complemented by bridal crowns (Schäppel), bonnets, and hats – including the famous Bollenhut (pompom hat) – as well as objects from rural life. The presentation shows how religious denomination, wealth, and fashion shaped the regional costumes.
