About the museum
The museum at Domplatz tells about 10,000 years of geological, prehistoric and urban history in Fürstenwalde, a town that was at once an industrial site, a bishop's town, a border town and a trading town. It is run by the Kulturfabrik Fürstenwalde gGmbH (non-profit company).
The permanent exhibition has several sections. Four cabinets show the workshops of important trades such as bakers, shoemakers and butchers, but also rope makers, brickmakers and pewterers. A separate section is devoted to the Pintsch company, which settled in Fürstenwalde from 1872 and made the town a center of navigation beacon construction; a lighthouse in the museum courtyard recalls this.
In the cellar rooms dating from the 15th century is the collection of glacial erratics assembled by Walter Bennhold, chief engineer at Pintsch; it counts among the largest of its kind in Europe. As a complement, a rock garden was laid out in the Bürgerpark by the cathedral. The museum also offers educational programs for school classes and supports the Stolpersteine working group.
