Museum Grafschaft Dassel
City museum in a half-timbered house on Teichplatz on the history of Dassel and the Counts of Dassel, with paper, cast iron, and loom departments.
About the museum
The museum is run by the friends' association Förderverein Museum Grafschaft Dassel, founded in 2003, whose roughly 120 members volunteer to look after operations, outreach, and technology. In 2007, the museum was established in an old half-timbered house on Teichplatz, which was modernly converted and refurbished. It is located directly next to the Technikmuseum Blankschmiede Neimke, with which it coordinates its opening days.
On four floors, the exhibition traces the development of the former county since the 12th century. One focus is the Counts of Dassel, their ancestral castle Hunnesrück, and above all Rainald von Dassel, who became known as imperial chancellor and Archbishop of Cologne. A model shows the fortified core of the town around 1750; further sections are devoted to municipal development up to the territorial reform as well as crafts and housework in the 19th century.
Two parts of the collection point to trades that made Dassel known beyond the region: a watermark collection on papermaking and handmade paper production, documented here since 1584, and casting molds and stoves from the Dassel ironworks, whose tradition dates back to 1690. In addition, there are paintings by Josef Wenzel with views of the town before 1970, archaeological finds from the old mill ditch, and a working loom from 1800 on which weaving is demonstrated.
