Offener Prozess – Ein Dokumentationszentrum zum NSU-Komplex

Place of remembrance and education in Chemnitz city centre on the NSU complex, with the exhibition "Offener Prozess" (Open Trial) told from the perspective of those affected.

Opening hours Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The documentation centre opened in May 2025 on Johannisplatz in Chemnitz, in the year the city was European Capital of Culture. It commemorates the people murdered by the right-wing terrorist "National Socialist Underground" between 2000 and 2007, and the victims injured in the bomb attacks and armed robberies. Chemnitz was chosen deliberately: here and in Zwickau the core trio lived underground for years and found support in the local neo-Nazi scene.

The centre was preceded by many years of preparatory work by Saxon civil society. The associations RAA Sachsen and ASA-FF presented a concept and feasibility study for a documentation site in south-west Saxony in 2023; the project was realised together with the Initiative Offene Gesellschaft. The centre is now run by the non-profit Offener Prozess gGmbH. It sees itself as a pilot project for a future nationwide network of documentation and memorial sites.

At its centre is the widely awarded exhibition "Offener Prozess", which previously toured Germany as a travelling exhibition and is continually expanded. It links the history of the NSU complex with the families' struggles for clarification and with migrant, especially East German, lived realities. It is complemented by an archive, a meeting place for those affected and initiatives ("Assembly") and a welcome area where hosts invite visitors to talk.
