About the museum
The exhibition "Hinter Gittern" (Behind Bars) was created in 1989 in the Kaisersaal wing of the former Cistercian abbey of Kaisheim. From 1816 the baroque monastery buildings first served as a forced labor institution, later as a penitentiary, and today house a prison.
In four rooms the museum shows how imprisonment in Bavaria has changed since the 19th century: from daily prison life and the organization of incarceration, through the stages of a prisoner from admission to release, to the difficulties after returning to freedom. Topics include labor as punishment, cell furnishings, chains and corporal punishment, and escape attempts.
