About the museum

The Begegnungsstätte (meeting place) commemorates the composer Werner Egk, who was born in 1901 as Werner Joseph Mayer in Auchsesheim near Donauwörth. From 1921 he studied with Carl Orff in Munich, created numerous operas, ballets and concert works under his artist name, and died in 1983 in Inning am Ammersee; his grave is in the Städtischer Friedhof (municipal cemetery) in Donauwörth. In 1971 the city made him an honorary citizen and endowed the Werner-Egk-Kulturpreis (cultural prize).

The exhibition on the upper floor of the historic Capuchin monastery is organized around four phases of life: childhood and youth, the early years, the mature Egk and the late Egk. Shown are, among other things, stage design models, early drawings, photographs, the violin of his wife Elisabeth Karl, three lithographs by Oskar Kokoschka, and his Blüthner grand piano together with furniture from the living room in Inning. A separate room documents the scandal surrounding his 1948 ballet "Abraxas"; in the corridor, the recipients of the cultural prize since 1973 are honored.

Following the independent study "Keine Reue! Heil!", published in 2024, on Egk's relationship to National Socialism, the city council decided on a new approach to his legacy; the city documents the statement and the study on its website.
