About the museum

The Haus der Stadtgeschichte opened in 1986 in the Rieder Tor, Donauwörth's only surviving city gate. The listed building stands at the transition from the old town island of Ried to the Reichsstraße; the present gate dates from 1811 and was badly damaged in World War II.

The exhibition follows the city's development from its beginnings around Mangoldstein Castle and Heilig Kreuz Monastery, through the market charter of 1030, to the coat-of-arms charter of Charles V, which in 1530 granted the Imperial City the coat of arms still valid today. Coins, from Staufer bracteates through thalers of the 16th century to the emergency money of the inflation period, tell of the history of money, while the executioner's sword and neck violin (a pillory device) tell of municipal jurisdiction.

Further chapters deal with the battles for the city in the 17th and early 18th centuries, the bombing in April 1945 that destroyed large parts of Donauwörth, and the reconstruction. Romantic landscape paintings and raft models show the location at the confluence of the Danube and the Wörnitz. On the fourth floor, the Heimatortgemeinschaft Lovrin (local community association) maintains a Heimatstube (local history room) with mementos from the Banat.
