About the museum

The roots go back to 1919, when the wholesale cheese merchant Rudolf Herz set up an Upper Allgäu local history museum in an old farmhouse. The building was destroyed in an air raid toward the end of the war, but Herz had moved many pieces out beforehand. In 1957, a new local history museum opened in the Hörmannhaus on Klosterplatz, which proved too small in the long run.

The solution was offered by the Hofmühle on the Aach: after a town fire in 1763, Count Franz Hugo von Königsegg-Rothenfels had it rebuilt; in the 19th century it was considered one of the most efficient mills in Bavarian Swabia; later it served the Mechanische Bindfadenfabrik (mechanical twine factory). According to the museum, the town of Immenstadt took over the dilapidated listed building in 1986 and had it thoroughly renovated starting in 1987.

Since 1990, the Hofmühle has been the regional museum for the upper Allgäu, run by the Heimatverein Immenstadt. In 1997, the exhibition space grew to around 1,000 square meters. On three levels, it covers water and mills, trade in salt and linen, crafts, traditional costumes and scenes of life, as well as industrial history – from the twine factory founded in 1855 to Riedel-Motoren-AG and its motorcycle "Imme," to Kunert stockings and Bosch. In addition there are paintings by the painter Johann Georg Grimm, who came from Bühl am Alpsee, special exhibitions, lectures, and weddings.
