About the museum

The Allgäu Mountain Farmers Museum is located in the Immenstadt district of Diepolz on the slope of the Hauchenberg, at an elevation of more than 1,000 meters with wide views of the Allgäu Alps. It is run by the Allgäuer Bergbauernmuseum e.V. association and supported by, among others, the town of Immenstadt, the Swabia district (Bezirk Schwaben) and the Oberallgäu county. It opened in July 2002.

Because demand was high and important topics were still missing, the grounds were expanded between 2006 and 2008: the Sattler farm from Schöllang near Oberstdorf and the Rosshütte from the Immenstadt town forest were dismantled and rebuilt in Diepolz. In the Sattler farm, a social-history exhibition shows the everyday life of a mountain farming family around 1920, and a wheelwright's workshop allows craft demonstrations.

The museum tells the story of the transformation from the "blue Allgäu" of flax growing to dairy and cheese farming and on to today's agriculture. A working museum farm with old livestock breeds such as Allgäu Brown cattle, mountain sheep and Bentheim pigs, a walk-through cow stomach, herb garden, bee house and the historic Höfle alpine hut make the subject tangible. Playgrounds, courses and guided tours appeal especially to families and school classes.
