About the museum
The farmhouse in Knechtenhofen, about three kilometers from Oberstaufen, was built at the end of the 17th century using log construction and is over 300 years old. The Heimatverein Thalkirchdorf (local heritage association) bought the property in 1975 and restored it over three years of work; it opened as a farmhouse museum in 1979.
The furnished rooms, including a kitchen, parlor, bedroom, and cheese cellar, convey rural life in the Allgäu in the 19th century. On the upper floor are a loom and equipment for processing flax, and there are also workshops of a shoemaker and a saddler. Field implements, machines for grain processing, Holzlarven (carved wooden masks), and historic clothing complement the collection.
The museum is run on a volunteer basis by members of the local heritage association.
