About the museum
Sassanfahrt lies on the eastern slope of the Steigerwald above the Regnitz valley and is first documented in 1124 as “Sazenvart”; the name is interpreted as the place where Saxons arrived at a ford across the Regnitz. The village belonged to the Diocese of Bamberg, passed in 1315 to Count Gottfried von Brauneck-Hohenlohe and a few decades later to the knightly von Stiebar family. For centuries it consisted only of the palace and five farms. After the Thirty Years' War the estate belonged to Gottfried von Schlammersdorf; in 1784 it was bought by Julius von Soden, later an Imperial Count, who wrote here and had the small “Tropfhäuser” (drip houses) built for new settlers.
The palace consists of two joined buildings: an older, cube-shaped block with three storeys and a younger two-storey extension to the south containing a hall two storeys high. A notable feature is a wooden open-newel staircase from the 19th century. The market town of Hirschaid had the building restored from 2011 to 2014 and opened it in July 2014 as the Julius-von-Soden cultural and educational centre.
Since 2022 the first floor has housed a permanent exhibition on the history of the municipality of Hirschaid. It tells how the transport routes through the Regnitz valley influenced people's lives, using texts, pictures and models. A dedicated museum app accompanies the tour.
