About the museum
Until 1784, Sassanfahrt consisted of only a few farms and an estate. The new lord of the manor, Baron Julius Heinrich von Soden, then deliberately recruited new residents and had about one hundred very small houses built for them. Where rainwater dripped from the roof, the plot ended – hence the name "Tropfhäuser" (drip houses). They measured only about 35 square meters on average.
The residents lived mainly from home-based work, above all as basket weavers. Because there was hardly any land for farming and the goods had to be sold by peddling, many families became impoverished; Sassanfahrt's poverty was widely known in the 19th century.
The museum occupies one of the few unaltered surviving drop houses and is considered the smallest open-air museum in Bavaria. It shows how up to ten people lived and worked in the tightest of spaces. It is run by the Verein Kunst- und Kulturbühne Hirschaid (association).
