About the museum
The core of the museum goes back to the town's 1907 purchase of the town-history collection of Anklam banker Rösler, which teachers such as Max Sander had encouraged. The first permanent exhibition opened on June 30, 1927, in the assembly hall of the former Präparandenanstalt (teacher training school). The house got through the war years mainly thanks to Hermann Scheel, who kept the holdings together. After 1945 there was initially no permanent display; in the following decades the museum moved several times.
Today it is housed in the Steintor, the oldest building in the Hanseatic town and, at 32 meters, the tallest brick-Gothic city gate in Pomerania. Across five floors, reached by 111 steps, the permanent exhibition shows traces of Slavs and Vikings on the Peene, the founding of the town, the Hanse and the Middle Ages, through the Thirty Years' War and the period between Sweden and Prussia, the changes of the 19th century, and war and destruction from 1933 to 1949. A separate section is devoted to the Anklamer Schatzfund (Anklam treasure) from the Thirty Years' War.
The holdings also include a Pomerania library, a large picture archive, personal papers, a gallery and special collections such as irons and washboards. A historic classroom in the neighboring Cothenius school belongs to the museum. The museum is run by the Hansestadt Anklam.
