Museum Lassaner Mühle
Local history museum in the former water mill of Lassan on the Peenestrom: town history, old crafts and preserved mill technology.
About the museum
A water mill has been documented at this spot in Lassan since the 15th century. The present two-story half-timbered building with a stone gable was built in the 19th century after its predecessor burned down. Until 1930 a water wheel powered the mill, then a diesel engine and later an electric motor. It remained in service until 1976, most recently for the local agricultural cooperative (LPG); after that the building stood almost empty for years and served the town as a storage space.
In 1982 interested citizens joined together to form the Interessengemeinschaft Heimatgeschichte Lassan (local history interest group). Over six years, together with numerous Lassan businesses, individuals and with the support of the then district, they converted the mill into a museum, which opened on July 9, 1988. The association still runs the building on a volunteer basis, has published local history booklets since 1989 and shows special exhibitions by regional artists during the season.
The exhibition is spread over three levels. On the raised ground floor, preserved machine parts of the mill stand alongside the town's history from its first settlement to 1945 and portraits of well-known natives of Lassan such as Bernt Notke, Johann Joachim Spalding and Theodor Bartus. The upper floor is devoted to seafaring, fishing and woodworking with guild equipment; in the basement are a smithy, a wheelwright's shop, a baking oven and remains of the old drive technology. Opposite, the Friedrich-von-Lösewitz-Halle displays historical agricultural machinery.
