About the museum
The museum is housed in the Old Town Hall of Rheinheim, a building with a stair gable from the early 16th century. Although it is sometimes called an imperial hunting lodge, according to the museum no emperor ever stayed there; at most, officials of Further Austria (Vorderösterreich) did. In the 19th century the building served as a school and town hall; school use ended in 1960. Later it housed the municipal office and a medical practice. Today the museum occupies the ground floor and the cellar rooms.
The house opened in 1985 and is run by the Museumsverein Küssaberg e. V. The permanent exhibition shows finds from the Roman legionary camp at Dangstetten (around 15 to 9 BC), which was discovered in 1967 during gravel extraction and excavated until 1988. The finds include weapon parts, brooches, writing styluses, seal capsules, gaming pieces, and stamped terra sigillata.
A second focus is the late Roman double fort of Zurzach-Rheinheim from the 4th century, with its Rhine bridge, which dendrochronology dates to AD 368. In addition, changing exhibitions on cultural and artistic themes are shown regularly.
