About the museum

The Basler Tor, also called the Lower Gate, was built in the mid-13th century when Waldshut was founded. During the Waldshut War of 1468, under bombardment from Bernese cannons, it collapsed by half and was then rebuilt over roughly a decade. The city fire of 1495 damaged it again, and in 1916 there was further fire damage. Unlike the Upper Gate, it never served as a prison and therefore still largely shows its original condition.

The Junggesellenschaft 1468 (bachelors' guild) has looked after the tower since it took part in its renovation. Across several floors, it presents its guild museum: the board room holds copies of the 1468 peace treaty together with its preliminary agreements, as well as plaques and 19th-century views of the town. One floor higher is the old clockwork, with pictures of guild members from the time before the guild ban during World War II. The gallery is dedicated to the Waldshut Chilbi (town festival), with the Bock of the 500th Chilbi, costumes, mugs, songbooks and the original of the Junggesellenmarsch.

In the stairwell, pictures and membership certificates tell of the transformation of Kaiserstraße into a pedestrian zone. The highlight is the Türmerstube (tower watch room), with a view over Kaiserstraße, the Viehmarkt square and as far as Switzerland. The guild uses the tower room and kitchen for its own events.
