About the museum
The museum's roots lie in an association for the promotion of a military technology museum, founded by Thomas Hug with friends. In 1989 he first opened the Fortress Museum in nearby Reuenthal. From 1998, a new museum hall was built in Full, which today serves as a workshop building; in 2004 the Swiss Military Museum Full opened its doors. It is run by the Verein Militär- und Festungsmuseum Full-Reuenthal, which has also acquired and restored numerous fortifications from the active-service period and the Cold War.
In April 2010, an additional hall of about 3,000 square metres with armoured vehicles from various countries and the exhibition on the MOWAG factory collection were added. It mainly shows prototypes and pre-series vehicles. Among its special features is the complete factory collection of the former arms manufacturer Oerlikon-Bührle with aircraft and anti-aircraft weapons.
From 2022, the association began further expansion phases: additional land was acquired, a storage hall was built, and a new museum hall and a site for vehicle demonstrations are planned. In autumn 2023 it became known that the Panzermuseum Thun is largely being dissolved and its mainly foreign tanks will come to Full, where they are to be restored and later exhibited.
Today the collection ranges from the armoured car of the 1930s and the Russian T 34/85 to the Leopard 1A4, complemented by a tin figure collection and exhibitions on the horse in the army and on the combat divers of the Swiss Army.
