About the museum

The Museum Petersberg is housed in a four-sided farmstead built in 1752 as a royal Prussian forester's house. For more than two centuries, the farmstead served as the forestry office of the Petersberg domain; today the complex is a protected monument and has been largely restored.

The museum is run by the Förderverein Erholungsgebiet Petersberg (friends' association), which also operates the neighboring zoo. In terms of content, the museum is devoted to the history of the historic Saalkreis. The opening is formed by the exhibition on the Augustinian canons' monastery on the Petersberg and on Conrad of Wettin, the progenitor of the Saxon ruling house, including a model of the collegiate church around 1200.

In the former stable of the farm building, the cultural and social history of the 19th century is shown; a historic bakehouse with a wood-fired oven is put into operation on selected Sundays. Since September 2016, a permanent loan on the Nuremberg tin toy factory Josef Kraus & Co. has been on view in the new exhibition building.

The museum is known beyond the region for its numerous special exhibitions in four exhibition rooms. Added to this are festivals in the museum courtyard and the small-stage series "Der besondere Donnerstag" (The Special Thursday).
