About the museum
The roots of the old school in Görzig go back to 1579; it is considered the oldest school in the former Köthen district. Two sketches of the first school building are preserved in the Landesarchiv (state archive) in Dessau. It combined a teacher's apartment with a hallway, kitchen, storeroom and living room with a schoolroom, and was much smaller than the present house.
As early as 1821, a new building was planned because the old one had suffered from rain and frost. The new school building was completed on November 14, 1831. Its classroom measures about 7.70 by 5.60 meters; in the mid-19th century, around 128 children were taught there, in shifts. In the GDR era, the room served as the music room of the larger school.
When lessons began in the new large school in 1976, teaching in the old house ended. Today it houses the Dorfmuseum Görzig.
