Museum Quintana
Archaeological museum in Künzing covering 7,000 years of settlement history, with finds from the Roman fort Quintana and an information center on the Danube Limes World Heritage Site.
About the museum
The impetus for the museum came from Werner Friedenberger, Künzing's local heritage officer, who wanted to display the many archaeological finds from the municipal area permanently on site. A museum association was founded in 1990, and the museum opened in July 2001 in the presence of former Federal President Roman Herzog.
The museum shares a building designed by Franz Miedl with the municipal town hall; it was built on the site of a former fruit and vegetable cooperative and offers about 700 square meters of exhibition space. The operator is the municipality of Künzing, and in professional terms the museum is a partner museum of the Archäologische Staatssammlung München (Bavarian State Archaeological Collection).
The museum is named after the Roman auxiliary fort Quintana, which was excavated together with its adjoining settlement in the 1950s and 1960s. The permanent exhibition leads from the first farmers of the Neolithic period through rich Bronze Age graves and life on the Roman Danube frontier to the early Middle Ages. Among the best-known pieces are the burial of a Neolithic woman from Niederpöring with a headdress made of snail shells and a large Roman hoard of ironwork.
Since the Künzing amphitheater was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2021 as part of the Danube Limes, the museum has served as an interpretation center for this World Heritage Site. A family tour with Playmobil scenes and numerous school and holiday programs make it a place of learning for children.
