About the museum

The Ziegel- und Kalk Museum lies on the edge of the Flintsbach district of the market municipality of Winzer and grew out of a decommissioned lime works. The centerpiece of the site is the Hoffmann ring kiln from 1883, in which lime and bricks were fired until 1968. It is one of the defining monuments of the complex.

In the exhibition building, covering about 400 square meters, the thousands-of-years-old history of brick and lime production is told. In the extensive outdoor area, a small forge, a machine hall, a drying shed, a Lorenbahn (narrow-gauge track for ore carts) and the clay pit show how a small operation worked at the threshold between craft and industrial production.

The museum is designed to be hands-on: visitors can model with clay and glaze pieces for firing, a soil trail leads to fossils and earth pigments, and there are herb tours as well as programs for school classes, kindergartens and children's birthday parties. Annually changing special exhibitions and activity weekends complement the permanent exhibition. The museum is operated by the market municipality of Winzer.
