Gerhard Neumann Museum
Private aviation museum in Niederalteich with a Starfighter, MiG-21, Hansa Jet and engines – visits only with a tour led by the founder.
About the museum
The museum is named after the aviation engineer Gerhard Neumann. Born in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1917, the engineer came to the USA in 1946 after years in Asia, worked from 1948 as an engineer at General Electric and rose there to head of the engine division. Under his responsibility the J79 was developed, the first jet engine for flights at twice the speed of sound, which powered the F-104 Starfighter and the F-4 Phantom, among others. Neumann held several patents, for example on variable guide vanes, and was honored with the Otto Lilienthal Medal, among other awards.
The museum was founded by Josef Voggenreiter, who had served as an aircraft mechanic with Fighter Wing 74 in Neuburg an der Donau and had been passionate about aviation since childhood. His acquaintance with Neumann gave the impetus: in January 1997, the engineer visited Niederalteich together with his wife, a few weeks before his death. The museum opened in 2000; it is run by Voggenreiter's company Flugtechnik Voggenreiter.
The exhibition spans the arc from the age-old dream of flying to modern fighter jets. On display are, among others, an F-104G Starfighter, a stripped-down Starfighter with its technology exposed, a MiG-21 from Hungary, a Eurofighter, a Bo 105 helicopter, an SG 38 training glider and a rare model of the stealth pre-prototype Lampyridae. An HFB 320 Hansa Jet hangs from the ceiling, along with engines such as the CF6.
